Ironbridge
In 1779, Ironbridge (one word) was the first cast-iron bridge to be built. It stretches one hundred feet over the Ironbridge Gorge in England.
In 1795, floods devastated the area around Ironbridge. All the stone bridges in the area were destroyed, because of the large amount of surface area that they need. The thick stone bridges were easily swept away in the floods. However, Ironbridge remained. It was the only bridge in the area not destroyed. It proved that iron was an important building material for bridges.
